Cistanche extract

There are many types of Cistanche extracts on the market, but their active ingredients are the same: phenylethanoid glycosides, echinacoside, and acteoside (verbascoside). (Of course, there are more than three active ingredients in Cistanche extracts. Some special-purpose Cistanche extracts pursue other ingredients, which we will discuss later). The main differences between these Cistanche extracts are production processes, raw material types, active ingredient content, etc.

  • Introduction to different types of Cistanche extracts

1. According to the different solvents used in the production of Cistanche extract, Cistanche extract is divided into ethanol-extracted Cistanche extract and water-extracted Cistanche extract. 

The ethanol-extracted Cistanche extract has a higher content of verbascoside. This is because acteoside (verbascoside)is easily soluble in ethanol. When the raw material of Cistanche is soaked in ethanol, more acteoside (verbascoside)can be diluted. Due to this characteristic of acteoside (verbascoside), the content of acteoside (verbascoside)in water-extracted Cistanche extract will naturally be very low, which also indirectly affects the cost-effectiveness of water-extracted Cistanche extract. However, the solubility of echinacoside in ethanol and water is good. Therefore, the content of echinacoside in the above two Cistanche extracts is good.

2. There are two kinds of Cistanche extract with different raw materials, Cistanche tubulosa extract and Cistanche deserticola extract.
There are hundreds of species of Cistanche recorded so far, but only Cistanche tubulosa and Cistanche deserticola are allowed to be used commercially. These two types of Cistanche have different origins and hosts (Cistanche is a parasitic plant), but their growing environments are roughly the same. When manufacturers use them to produce Cistanche extract, they will extract the same ingredients mentioned above: phenylethanoid glycosides, echinacoside, and acteoside (verbascoside). However, due to the high content of oligosaccharides in Cistanche deserticola, it is easy to change its physical form after drying, so it is difficult to process into the standardized extract. Cistanche deserticola is often used to produce ratio/proportion extracts (Related reading: Classification of plant extracts). We usually use Cistanche tubulosa to process standardized extracts.
 
3. According to the different standards for extracting active ingredients, Cistanche extracts are divided into ratio extracts and standard extracts.
As mentioned above, the raw materials of Cistanche used in ratio extract and standard extract are different. Their production standards are also different. The content of active ingredients in the standard extract of Cistanche tubulosa is measured, clearly defined, and has implementation standards. However, the content of active ingredients in the ratio extract of Cistanche deserticola is erratic because its production standard is based on the number of extractions.
